1-107 (1757 - 1795)
The numbering of the symphonies in Dutch musicologist Anthony van Hoboken's catalogue of Haydn's works, which is still in popular use today (Anthony van Hoboken, Joseph Haydn: thematisch-bibliographisches Werkverzeichnis. Band 1: Instrumentalwerke, Mainz 1957), is based on the list of 104 symphonies adjudged to be authentic which were included in the list of contents of the old complete edition of Haydn's works published in 1908 by Eusebius Mandyczewski, archivist of the Society of Friends of Music in Vienna (Joseph Haydns Werke. Erste kritische durchgesehene Gesamtausgabe. Serie 1. Symphonien, Band 1, Leipzig [1908], pp. IV-VII); Hoboken was later to add to this list the Sinfonia concertante (I:105) and three symphonies which came to light at a later date (I:106-108).
Since the date of composition of many early works was unknown on account of the autograph copies being missing, lost, or untraceable at the time, Mandyczewski arranged the symphonies «ante quem», i.e. in accordance with the dates noted in the sources available to him or listed in various acquisition or sales catalogues.
In a considerable number of cases, Haydn scholars were later able to correct the numbering system used by Mandyczewski and Hoboken, and their findings have been taken into account in the chronological list of symphonies which follows.
